UPS Drivers. There are many Driver positions available within UPS Package Operations and within UPS Freight. UPS, long regarded as the leading provider of small.
But they need good reason, can t do it just because
Hey just wondering if they test the drivers for drugs.
Yes but it does not detect serial killers so you re ok.
they do.. I know they do for feeders but in over 20 years I ve never heard of this for pkg car.
they only random test cdl and class a they can not test pkg car drivers. go to page 89 and 90 of the contract
If, management suspects a driver to be under the influence of a controlled substance, you better believe they ll send the person for a drug test.
I ve seen this happen to a driver here in So. Cal. A customer on His route, called in to report His out of the ordinary behavior. He was terminated of course.
If any driver has a problem, please get some help.
I would like to know what specific behavior the driver was fired for.
Was acting real agitated. Seemed to be in a hurry. Mumbled something about having to be 5 places in the next 2 minutes.
Not sure what the behavior was, but we can assume it was very odd, for a customer to be that concerned.
The point is, He s no longer employed due to drug abuse.
The problem with this observation is its normal behavior for a UPS driver,, lol. There is no way a human can be given our work load and act normal. Add 4 OCA s to an already tight pick-up schedule and its enough to make someone crazy.
I have to point out that this is the area UPS rubs customers the wrong way. Its a solid reason why they choose the competition over UPS. They employ too many drivers that can t handle the workload and pass their frustration on to the customers.
The customers don t care and they don t want a delivery person ranting and raving about how difficult his job is. The center should either lighten him up or not make him seniority because its ruining our reputation.
That is what is called, A Sense of Urgency
You kill me. I come on here just to check out your replies most times.
i am in feeders and we get them all the time, you are correct about the cdl part, my mistake
We had a driver get into an accident where the person he hit was hurt they tested him and he failed. So as long as your not stupid and hurt someone you are probably not going to get tested. The guy just made his 30 days too. We have also had 5 drivers get DUIs last year and our clerk went into treatment for drugs. Im noticing a trend here at UPS.
Its not just a trend a UPS. Its all of society. In case you haven t noticed our kids are not just smoking weed and dropping acid.
Prescription drug abuse has become an epindemic. This is a superhighway to heroin use.
Times have changed. When I was in high school during the late 1980 s I didn t know what a percocet was. Now you can get OxyContin as easy as you can buy a pack of cigarettes.
I have highlighted the parts of your post that I found most concerning. Are you condoning drug use.
This is one time that I am glad that I am not a trend setter.
No Not condoning the use especially if you are driving. However I have been around this stuff all my life and know that people are going to do it and wether I condone it or not the are still going to do it. I dont use nor have I ever used. I have just noticed in the last 8 years that It seems to be getting worse these last two years at UPS.
After reading this I ran right over to rite aid for a pack of luckys
and some oxy. Getting the oxy was a bit more difficult than the
You should have called me--I had 10 cases of Oxy on the pkg car this past Tuesday.
We had a story last year sometime. This guy goes into the Target pharmacy and draws a gun telling the pharmacist Give me all your oxycotin. After he left the cops wanted a description of this armed robber. The Pharmacist says you re not going to believe this but I recognize him as a Deputy Sheriff who used to pick up his meds here even though he had a ski mask on.
They ended up arresting one of their own after watching surveillance tapes. This Sheriff was hooked on oxy after a chronic back injury. I didn t know oxy had that affect.
Oxycontin / Percocet / Roxicet, et al, are all Analgesics sp. with an Opiate mix, for moderate to severe pain. There is no more addictive substance on the planet with the exception of nicotine.
Edited - and yes, 1994, after Kidney Surgury.
And the driver needed to get a sales lead as well..
Package car drivers not subject to random urines no CDL license
Feeder drivers class A CDL subject to random urines weight class 26001 lbs or higher
Urines are not done by UPS but by the D.O.T.
I think you would be suprised at the number of people at UPS that get high in some capacity. I know of alot of package car drivers in my old center that get high. What they do on their time is their business. I spent 6 years on the preload and 10 years on a package car and would have tested positive for marijuana the entire 16 years. Put my favorite past-time smoking pot on hold for feeder gravy knowing that in 10 years UPS will be a thing of my past and I will resume being Rasta man. king o weed
How bout Package drivers who have a CDL. Are they tested.
They shouldn t be tested because the truck they are driving isn t above 26000 lbs but it has happened from time to time at my building. A mistake was made and the D.O.T. came in with a package drivers name on their list of drivers to be tested. stuff happens
Actually I was tested while in Package. I think Package CDL holders who are also Feeder qualified by the company, are subject to randoms.
There is no more addictive substance on the planet with the exception of Brown Cafe.
yes you re right about that - if a package car driver has a CDL and is feeder qualified he would be subject to randoms. That goes for supervisors and mechanics as well. If not feeder qualified then probably not on the hit list. I know of 2 drivers that went from feeders back to packages years ago and let the CDL status of their drivers license return back to regular auto driver license so that they wouldn t be on the D.O.T. hit list. Also a big difference with a possible DUI when blowing into a breathalizer.
See Porkwagon you just proved my point. These kids aren t getting it from a pharmacy. They get carded for cigarettes in a store and can t buy them if under 18.
Drug dealers don t card their customers. So a 16 year old can score an OC from the local drug deal much easier than he can buy a pack of smokes.
Do you think all pills are obtained by the user directly from the pharmacy. How could this be possible.
I had a friend who worked in the pharmacy as a cashier just so he can score the broken or throw-away pills. For some reason he can t get a good job anymore
Are randoms or after accident drug screens done at the warehouse or have you sent to a clinic/hospital to be conducted by health proffessionals. Frankly when I was working at fedex I noticed a lot of favoritism and realize your test could be tampered with by ppl wanting you gone if not done by a health proffesionals.
After the Ryan Braun situation in MLB, it s typically general knowledge now that FedEx should never be trusted to do anything right when it comes to drug tests.
EDIT: disregard this. Dino Laurenzi, Jr. was not employed by Fedex. My bad.
If management suspects you under he influence of drugs or alcohol, a member of management will take you to a clinic approved by the company for a blood test, or whatever test they deem necessary. I guess if you refuse you will be terminated on the spot. When I was in feeders, a guy s name came up for random testing. He had been sent back to package car after peak, and claimed he wasn t required to take it since he was in package now. Wrong. He finally admitted he had been hitting the weed regularly since being sent back. He had to go thru a drug program and jump thru sufficient hoops so that the company figured he was punished enough. This was 5 or so years ago, and as far as I know, he is still there, minus the weed, that is. You just have to make a decision as to what is more important, a 100,000 a year job with all the benefits or smoking a joint whenever you want.
Im working with UPS now was hoping to get feedback from an experienced package delivery driver.
After accident drug test is done at an outside clinic.
Just curiousdid he take the drug test and fail firstor admit to smoking weed to avoid taking the test.
He admitted it before the test, I know that. He saw the writing on the wall. Not sure about taking the test afterward. I m guessing he eventually took it and failed. The DOT usually gets their way. I was told once if your name came up to pee in a cup, there was NO getting out of it.
About 20 of my randoms over the years, they also make you blow into a breathalyzer for BAC. You probably say no way anyone would come to work drunk, but we had a driver blow a. 04 and was taken out of service. He was about to retire. He had to go thru the required consequences, came back for a short time, and retired quietly shortly afterward.
I tell people I don t know that ask about working for UPS that the company always tests. Don t want them behind the wheel or thinking they have my back if that d be a problem for them.
As I m sitting here thinking about it, it came back to me. I guess I m getting senile He did take the test, and it was negative for cannabis. I guess he stalled long enough for it to drop out of his system. He did however, throw himself under the bus. Hard to un-ring that bell, lol.
I have been randomly selected 3 times this year. Twice I went to a clinic, once met a person from the testing place at the office. He went to the can with me, I filled the bottle, signed and initialed all the paperwork and was good to go.
He was in the bathroom with you.
I had someone in the bathroom the very first time I had to take a pre employment test, was a bit weird, but they needed to make sure it was mine I guess just a bit creepy lol
Do you really think he wanted to be in there with you. He was just doing his job.
Lol I know that, was just saying. Was well over 10 years ago though
Honestly i have a class B license..I dont think it would be a bad Idea to have drug teats for all UPS driversmy opinion
Bathroom/locker room. Pretty big place. It s not like he was standing next to me, looking over my shoulder.
Are you sure it was D, and not d.
I do know a few drivers that do their own drug testing. Seems a strange recreation to me.
Nice bump to a 5 year old thread. Why do you need feedback. Are you using something you re not supposed to. If not who cares if you are, stop. Seems pretty easy. UPS should test more often but they I imagine that if they started testing frequently, alot of people would be without jobs or the company would be springing for quite a bit of treament.
Because im new to the company and like I said in my 1st post, I dont trust non health care proffessionals with my sample due to favoritism in past jobs.does that answer your noseyness to the D..like you said, who cares why
Well your first post was a quote with nothing noting the quote but I won t get technical. Anyways, if you are so paranoid with a non health care professional tampering with your sample if you were to come back dirty, you can always get a second test done by someone at your expense. There is a little thing called chain of custody and unless you are giving your sample in some back alley you shouldn t worry about it unless of course you will comeback dirty.
Favoritism at your last job has no bearing in your current job. You said you were already employed at UPSso again why worry. If your a driver and are usingstop. If your not a driver then carry on with yourself..plenty of dopers who work inside that do a great job.
I say that on a regular basis when running air.
I dont think it would be a bad Idea to have drug teats for all
Mmm. So you d suck on it and start feeling good.
Oh ok, so it s not a routine thing like it is at USPS then.
USPS does not test. Neither do we. So smoke, drop, inject whatever you want.
I knew I shouldn t have taken those Aleve this morning. Better pop a couple of golden seal and drink a gallon of lemon water.
Last week the twilight hopper puller came stumbling in to work. Hub sort manager pulled him off and had him wait 5 hours until a nurse could draw blood for a drug/alcohol test. Yes you can be tested unless you just refuse and quit your job.
We don t need druggies, its unsafe and why would you do it at work. Its not cool.
I too, am a fan of teats. I m also for, testing them. Teats, that is
Neither of us would, want to get hold of a tainted set of teats.
UPS drivers are very hard positions to attain, but obviously it s possible.
As far as jobs without college experience go, it doesn t get any better than high pay, award-winning benefits, and full pension. Not to mention you are guaranteed to have all major holidays and weekends off.
If you re wondering what the allure is of driving a big truck and wearing brown shorts, read this first.
If you re still interested, here is my guide on how to become a UPS driver.
Before you decide to pursue your goal of becoming a UPS driver, you must decide if the job is right for you. You don t want to waste your time if you don t meet the demands of the position. To do this, just ask yourself these questions.
Are you OK with working fifty-plus hour weeks.
Are you a physical person with the ability to work through rigorous conditions.
Are you mentally strong enough to learn entire routes and react quickly in sticky situations.
Are you willing to travel in any weather conditions.
Watch this video to get a small preview of what the job will entail.
In order to become a UPS driver, you must be physically fit enough to lift up to 150 pounds or at least maneuver it, stand for long periods of time, lift and lower objects throughout the day, drive a vehicle for hours on end, and pass a DOT physical.
It is also important to note that you have to be able to drive a manual transmission and pass a UPS driving test no special license needed.
If you like to drink a lot or use drugs, you should probably look elsewhere for a career. I mean, c mon, they drive for a living. If you are caught under the influence of alcohol or test positive for a drug, needless to say, your UPS career will be over.
You are given a drug test during your DOT physical when becoming a UPS driver, but not during your hire as a part-time employee.
In order to meet the requirements of a UPS driver, you must fill these appearance requirements: no visible tattoos on arms/legs/neck/face/etc., must have short hair, no facial hair except mustaches, overall neat and clean appearance.
So cut your long hippie hair and shave the beard.
There are a few ways you can go about becoming a UPS driver. Before we get into how to become a ups driver, let s quickly discuss how the hiring process for drivers works.
Each UPS center has x amount of drivers. When one of these drivers is fired, quits, or retires, a spot opens up. UPS then releases a bid sheet for all employees in that current center to bid on the job. Each employee that wants the job signs the sheet, and the one with the most seniority gets the position.
If no one in that UPS center signs the bid for the job, they will hire someone off the street to fill the driver vacancy. You can probably get a clear view now why it is extremely rare to get hired off the street for these positions. Most UPS employees are there with hopes on getting hired to drive eventually.
The Three Ways To Become A UPS Driver
With that in mind, let s look into more realistic strategies on how to come a UPS driver. The first two examples are long shots, but I have seen people land full-time driver positions in this manner before.
If you are not already employed with UPS, you can go to the UPS hiring website and search for available driving jobs. This is a long shot, though. UPS hires very few drivers off the street. If you get hired this way, more power to you, but it s extremely unlikely.
If this is the route you want to take, go to Indeed.com and sign up for a free account. Set up job alertsand apply quickly once a spot opens up in your area. Indeed is the best way to ensure that you catch each UPS job posting, as they comb through all of the job websites online.
A great way to get your foot in the door as a driver quickly is to apply to be a seasonal driver. UPS hires seasonal drivers about two times a year: just before summer and just before Thanksgiving. Check for summer listings in April/May and Holiday listings in October on Indeed.com. Refer to the example above to get alerts sent to you for free when these spots open up.
Once you are hired as a seasonal driver, make sure to do everything to earn a good review from fellow employees. This is vital if you plan on getting a permanent position within the company. Always be on time and work hard; try to impress. If the timing is right, once in a while they will ask a seasonal driver to stay on permanently.
This is the way that UPS intends for their drivers to get their positions. The idea is that you start off with an entry-level position loading trucks or unloading trailers, and work your way up to a driver position. This method will work but it will take years, depending on the specific UPS center that you are working for.
To learn how to get a job at UPS, check out this post first.
After you landed your UPS job, whether it be pre-load or the twilight shift, now comes the hard part. Waiting.
Depending on the current needs of your center, positions will open up for other opportunities and bids are signed to gain these positions. Whoever has the most seniority will win the bid. If you want to be a driver, look for positions like Cover Driver vacation driver or Air Driver. These are positions where you will be driving, just not full-time. If you win a bid, they will give you a simple road test, get you a DOT physical, send you to UPS driving school, and have you ready to wear brown.
Once you gain one of these positions, you will be filling in from time to time driving routes for sick drivers or drivers who are on vacation. You will gain more hours and receive the high starting wage of a full-time driver. Air Drivers run Next Day Air packages on Saturdays and do random air runs in the morning and afternoons. Cover Drivers do the same, plus filling in for other drivers when necessary. This is a great way to gain responsibility and earn praise from management.
The ultimate goal, of course, is to land a full-time driving gig. To do this, you have to wait until a current driver is fired or retires and then a bid sheet will be released for the position. The employee with the most experience who signs a bid for the job will get it.
It takes years of work or a lot of luck to land a full-time driving position at UPS, but it is definitely worth it if you can make it happen.
How To Pass A Drug Test - Drug Testing Information and Resources on ups drug test.
I currently work at UPS and I know for a FACT they do not drug test for entry level jobs. Drivers and some full time employess get them and they send you to a clinic.
